DENTAL ASSISTANTS: THE “BACKBONE” OF DENTAL PRACTICES. Begin a great new job with dental assistant career training. Here is a list of why dental assisting professionals are so important:
1-They keep the office on track. “Dental assistants are the pulse of the office,” says Heather, a dental hygienist. “They keep the doctor on track, manage lab cases, and keep our instruments prepared.”
2-They maintain safety protocols. “Dental assistants allow the dentist to provide safe, swift, and friendly dentistry,” says Frances, a dental assisting instructor.
3-They improve patient retention. Dental Assistants are with patients from the time they check in for their appointments until they leave. Assistants are the liaisons between patients and the dental team, communicating key information about procedures, answering questions, and providing aftercare instructions. They also help calm the nerves of patients who are anxious about their visit.
4- They make everyone’s jobs easier. Dental Assistants help everyone in the practice. They help office managers maintain the schedule. They order, restock, and clean equipment so doctors and hygienists always have what they need. They sit chairside during appointments, anticipating the dentist or hygienist’s needs, ensuring they always have the proper tools in hand, and expediting procedures.

HOW IMPORTANT IS AN EXTERNSHIP?
Do not let other schools tell you an externship is not necessary! The time a student spends volunteering in a Dental Office in the capacity of an employee is an absolute necessity. When students learn procedures during class where they feel comfortable and relaxed working on fellow classmates, they “think” they’re ready, but until they are in an office and are asked to do the procedure on a patient is when they are truly on high alert and everything they’ve learned finally seals into their brain.
Students also realize quickly that what they learn in class will vary from office too office, so it is important to always remain positive with a willingness to adapt quickly to different protocols. Many students serve hours in different externship sites in order to experience new methods of technique.
